A survey details the size of a property, boundaries, ground contours and where improvements or alterations have been made.    

. If you have your survey available, you will find it useful in determining the right location for your fence.  Do not assume that the fence you already have is in the right place.  Each town has different codes pertaining to setback off property line, height, etc, so please consult your town code (see below) before proceeding.  

. If you don't have a copy of your survey, check the closing documents from the purchase of your home, ,or with your attorney, or your town.  

. If you cannot locate your survey, or you do not feel your current survey copy is up to date, consider having a new one done by a professional survey company.  These companies will either survey the entire property, or they can survey only the area you are interested in improving.   

. Whenever you have your survey performed, please make sure the surveying company installs permanent steel pins or "monuments" at the time of the survey.

. If you believe you have wetlands, check with your town to see if your home is listed on the current wetland map.
